This person was born on the 18 th August 1936 in Santa Monica, California. He was brought up by his mother from an early age as his father passed away when he was only young. He was a scrappy kid who stole hubcaps in High School and lost his college Baseball scholarship because of drunkeness. After he lost his scholarship he decided to study art at the Pratt Institute Of Arts in Europe, he then came back to America to study acting in New York at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He was married at this time and had 4 children and unfortunately lost one of them to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. His first debut was on the small screen as he starred in many TV roles such as The Twilight Zone, Maverick, Route 66 & Dr Kildaire . |

He also starred in quite a few Broadway shows, and due to all his stage and TV experience he got his first film role as Pvt Roy Loomis in the film War Hunt . From here his movie career really started to take off as he starred as characters such as Wade Lewis - Inside Daisy Clover, Charlie “Blubber ” Reeves - The Chase, Paul Bratter - Barefoot In The Park, Bill Mckay - The Candidate & Hubell - The Way We Were. He also turned down the role of Ben Braddock in the film The Graduate as he said he couldn't project enough naiveté. |

By the 70's & 80's his movie career was flourishing as he starred in roles such as Johnny Hooker - The Sting, Major Julian Cook - A Bridge To Far, Bob Woodward - All The Presidents Men, Denys George Finch Hatton - Out Of Africa & Tom Logan - Legal Eagles. Unfortunately his personal life wasn't going as well as in 1995 he was divorced from his wife. But now he was not only working in front of the camera but behind it as well. In 1980 he got his first directional debut with the film Ordinary People which won him an Oscar. |
