I am a real person, the eldest of three children, born in York on March 6th 1917, when I was 2½  the family moved to Eltham, as a child I used to put on plays for my younger sister and brother.

I had several attempts to become an actor, but after a disastrous RADA audition, decided
                   to try my hand at comedy. Joining an entertainment troop during WW II After the war, I
                   joined the BBC radio show Variety Bandbox and was voted best BBC comedian in 1950

–   In the early days of TV I was a regular at the Royal Variety Shows and starred in my first
                   film in 1954 as the coach driver in “The Runaway Bus”

In 1965 I went back to the Theatre to star in a play called “A Funny Thing Happened On 
                   The Way To The Forum”

                   the slave “Lurcio”
