This person was born on the 31 st May 1930 in San Francisco. He went to Los Angeles College to study for a business degree but dropped out after 6 months. He then went into the US army as a G.I. and while he was on duty his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and he had to swim 3 miles to shore, so after that he was made boot camp swim instructor. From there he was encouraged to go into acting by his army buddies and had bit parts in B-Grade movies such as Tarantula and Revenge Of The Creature .

Then he was dropped by studio execs because they said his adams apple was to big. But he dug his heels in and went to CBS where he was given a part on a TV show as Rowdy Yates .

From there he went on to bigger and better things, he went back into the movies starring in roles such as Joe - A Fistful Of Dollars, Marshal Jed Cooper - Hang Em High, Lt. Morris Schaffer - Where Eagles Dare & Hogan - Two Mules For Sarah. He was also supposed to play a villain in the TV show Batman but unfortunately that one episode got cancelled.

Then in the 70's it proved to be his best decade starring in many blockbuster films as characters such as David Garver - Play Misty For Me, John Doherty - Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, Ben Shockley - The Enforcer, Philo Beddoe- Every Which Way But Loose & Frank Morris - Escape from Alcatraz.

In one of the films he also stepped in as director when the original director fell ill. Which started him in directing and he was such a organized director he finished one film ahead of schedule.
